Combining isolated wilderness beauty with comfortable facilities, the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is a wonderful base to immerse yourself in the heart of the Flinders Ranges. Serving as a veritable outback hub from which to springboard onto a variety of excellent adventures, Arkaroola sits nestled amongst granite peaks within fiery terrain characteristic of the region that varies between hillsides, gorges, scrub and waterholes, much of which can be explored both via 4WD vehicle as well as on foot. This is a land dotted with wildlife, birds and wildflowers, with some truly amazing views on offer in multiple directions after fairly bumpy rides. Wildlife in the region can be spotted through the course of exploration, and the occasional sight of wallabies making their way across what is a relatively barren landscapes reinforces the fact of just how far away from civilisation you are while here.
Arkaroola also offers the chance to take part in a guided ridgetop tour up to the top of local lookout point Sillers which grants an astounding panorama of the surrounding ranges, while also providing additional context on the geography and indigenous history of the region. Another simple joy available here is provided simply by looking up - Arkaroola's location in a spot with little light pollution leads to some outstanding stargazing. Couple all of this with the exceptionally friendly locals and multiple levels of accommodation available, and those of all demographics can enjoy an escape to the South Australian outback here.
